Concrete and excavating under the name J.F. Burns is established by James F. Burns (I) in Calgary.

1920's
About the time that engine-driven concrete mixer replaces hand mixing, second generation James F. Burns (II) joins the firm at age 14. He becomes the driver of the first gravel truck, which is loaded and unloaded by hand.

1930's
J.F. Burns (I) retires his two teams of horses and dump wagons. J.F. Burns (II) establishes J.F. Burns Sand and Gravel. He designs, builds and operates a stationary crushing, screening and washing plant on the north bank of the Bow River in Calgary.
